PHL/251 CRITICAL THINKING- week 3 DQ

1-Inductive and Deductive reasoning. Do you know the difference? Have you ever seen a Venn diagram and do you know what it is used for? This week you will learn how to distinguish between deductive and inductive reasoning and to identify different types of causation, thereby thinking more critically about cause and effect issues. You should also grasp what a fallacy is and how they are used in an argument.
For this DQ you are to provide a definition and example for both Inductive and Deductive Reasoning.
Also look around your environment and find where a Venn diagram has been used. Many will find them in their conference rooms, lunch rooms or in presentations that are made at work. Describe what a Venn diagram is and how it is used to determine a solution to a problem.

2- This week we are discussing syllogisms. Many students make this portion of the course harder than it needs to be. A syllogism is basically an argument. In order for the argument to be valid it must contain certain elements.

This week you are to answer the following questions:
1.   What are the elements of a syllogism?
2.   What role does a syllogism plan in persuasion?
3.   Explain the difference between truth and validity in a syllogism.
4.   How can a syllogism be valid even if it is not true?
In Chapter 9 of your reading this week you will find the answers to all the questions above. I look forward to discussing this very interesting topic.
